Jonas Wood Paints the Court

Roy Lichtenstein at Auction

I think putting a big flower in the middle of the court is pretty radical. They basically let me put a big painting on the court. - Jonas Wood

LA-based artist Jonas Wood (b.1977) is a very enthusiastic basketball fan. Basketballs often appear in his paintings and he has a giant basketball sculpture, designed by Ghanaian artist Paa Joe, in his studio.

This year the LA Clippers are playing ball at the Intuit Dome, on a court whose floor was designed by Wood, wearing uniforms designed by Wood.

"The Clippers approached me to design the court and uniforms and I couldn't say yes fast enough.” Wood said, “It’s been a dream of mine to design a court. It's just an unbelievable opportunity. I’ve been going to Clippers games since I moved to LA, which was over 20 years ago, and I’ve been a season ticket holder for the last 5 seasons.”

His floor design, part of an LA Public Art program, includes two basketballs placed inside the “A” of LA, alongside a beautiful orchid…a somewhat unexpected and extraordinary image on a basketball court.

Wood often paints flowers and plants, on their own or in the vases and pots created by his wife, Shio Kusaka.

The works of Jonas Wood can be found in the permanent collections of The Met, MoMA, The Whitney, The Guggenheim, the Centre Pompidou and many other major venues.
