Alex Katz at MoMA

Picasso and Jonas Wood Paint Dogs; Loie Hollowell Has East Coast Survey

Alex Katz (b.1927) has always marched to a different drummer. When his contemporaries were immersed in Abstract Expressionism, Katz was drawing and painting portraits of his friends and family.

“My audience turned out to be poets and painters, the prime audience. And it was like a community. I went to a lot of poetry readings. And I read a lot of poetry too.” he said in a recent interview with Prudence Peiffer, the Museum of Modern Art’s Director of Content.

The art world has finally caught up to Katz thanks, in part, to the spectacularly successful retrospective he had a the Guggenheim last year.

Katz’s work is currently being shown in at a solo exhibit at MoMA. The exhibit, called Seasons, consists of four enormous paintings, each representing a season.

Katz said that he is spending the summer in Maine, as he has done for many decades. He paints and sketches the Maine landscape every summer and then returns to his SoHo studio to create his paintings.

Seasons will be on exhibit at MoMA through September 8, 2024.

The work of Alex Katz is also part of a group show at the Timothy Taylor Gallery in Manhattan dedicated to portraits of dogs. Dog Days of Summer features a variety of works by a variety of artists, many of whom invited their dog in their studio while they practiced the often solitary task of painting. The artists’ dogs are not just companions, but often serve as muses and models, as well. Included in the show, which features paintings, sculptures, drawing and prints from 1915 to the present, are works by two of our favorite artists, Pablo Picasso and Jonas Wood.

Picasso often drew and painted his dachshund named Lump. Wood included his dog, Robot, a terrier-mix in many of his paintings. Sadly, Robot died in 2021, but Wood has continued to include a variety of dogs in his works.

Dog Days of Summer will be on exhibit through August 23, 2024.

A look back at the work that Loie Hollowell (b.1983) has made in the last ten years is currently on exhibit at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, Connecticut. Space Between, A Survey of Ten Years will be at The Aldrich through August 11, 2024 and then travel to the Institute of Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University and be on view from September 6, 2024 to March 9, 2025.

Hollowell was born and raised in California. Though she lives and works in New York, and has had her works exhibited internationally, this show is her first museum survey on the East Coast.

The show includes richly colored paintings, focused on the female form,  that she is well-known for, along with works on paper and recently done pastel drawings.

Please contact us if you would like more information about the work of Alex Katz, Jonas Wood, Pablo Picasso or any of the other fine artists whose works are available at Surovek Gallery.
