Current Exhibits: Otis Quaicoe, Alex Katz and Donald Sultan

The works of Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe are currently on exhibit at The Hardwood Museum of Art at the university of New Mexico in Taos. Outriders: Legacy of the Black Cowboy depicts the daily life and work of African Americans who worked as cowboys and cowgirls from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. From pre-Civil War photographs to current art works, the exhibit celebrates the Black men and women who helped to settle the American West.

Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe was born, raised  and studied art in Ghana. He moved to Portland after marrying his American wife. The combined African and American cultures, and his superb portraiture, has gained him international recognition. Outriders: Legacy of the Black Cowboy will be on exhibit through May, 7 2023.

Alex Katz said he thinks that poetry is “more stimulating than painting.” As a young artist in New Yorker he befriended many poets and memorialized them in paintings and sculptures. His son, Vincent Katz, is a poet, who helped to curate the current show: Alex Katz: Collaborations with Poets at the Poetry Foundation in Chicago, on exhibit through May 20, 2023.

Katz also has upcoming solo exhibits scheduled in Paris, the Netherlands and in Seoul, Korea.

Donald Sultan grew up in Asheville, North Carolina. His father was an amateur painter who owned a tire company. Sultan combined talent, tar and tiles to create many of his large, textured and tactile works.

When Sultan moved to New York in 1975, he worked in construction during the day and painted at night. Leftover construction supplies, like linoleum tile, helped to define much of his work, which is included in a current exhibit at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City. The exhibit explores the way in which materials, science and engineering have been embraced by contemporary artists.

Tensile Strength will be on exhibit through June 11, 2023.
