Avery, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea in D.C.

Keith Haring Mural on Historic Register in PA

The exhibit Avery, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea is traveling from the Cape Ann Museum in Gloucester, Massachusetts to the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.

The exhibit brings together the art of Milton Avery (1885–1965), Adolph Gottlieb (1903–1974), and Mark Rothko (1903–1970) and examines the influence, and friendship, that the three great artists shared.

Gottlieb and Rothko visited the Averys’ New York apartment often, and traveled to Gloucester to vacation and paint during the summers of their long friendship.

The exhibit contains more than eighty works, done over more than twenty years, so that the evolution of each artist’s work is revealed.

According to gallerist Xavier Hufkens, “The Phillips Collection was the first museum in the United States to acquire work by Avery, to establish a permanent gallery for Rothko’s paintings in 1960, and to hold significant paintings by Gottlieb in its collection. The exhibition builds on recent technical research conducted at The Phillips Collection, where conservators studied works by the artists using advanced imaging and analytical techniques, yielding new insights into their materials, working methods, and creative processes. Numerous works will also be loaned from the artists’ family collections as well as from major museums and institutions across the country.”

Avery, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea will be on view at The Phillips Collection from October 24, 2026 through January 24, 2027.

The We The Youth Mural, created by Keith Haring (1958-1990) in 1987, has been officially added to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places by a unanimous vote of the Philadelphia Historical Commission.

Haring painted black outlines of figures and forms on the building’s wall while young people from New York and Pennsylvania completed the mural by painting inside his designs with multiple colors.

The mural has been restored twice, with support from the Keith Haring Foundation. It is the only Keith Haring collaborative public mural remaining intact and on its original site.
