KAWS has been included in TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in Art in 2026.
KAWS is named in the Titans category for his success in both the commercial and the fine art worlds.
Born in New Jersey in 1974, Brian Donnelly began his career as a graffiti artist. He chose the name KAWS because he liked the way the letters fit together visually.
KAWS is now Dr. KAWS. He was presented with an honorary doctorate from the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York. KAWS received his BFA from SVA in 1996. KAWS was the speaker at the school’s 51st annual commencement at Radio City Music Hall in May.
His works have global appeal; his work is currently on exhibit at the Albertina Modern in Vienna and at Space K Seoul, his first solo institutional exhibition in Korea.
In 2019, at Sotheby's in Hong Kong, The KAWS Album, 2005, a painting by KAWS, sold for 115.9 million Hong Kong dollars, or about $14.7 million U.S. dollars, a new auction record for the artist at the time.
KAWS works are in the permanent collection of the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C., the Brooklyn Museum, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the Zabludowicz Collection in London, the Rosenblum Collection in Paris, the CAC Malaga in Malaga, Spain, the Deji Art Museum in Nanjing, China, K11 Musea, in Hong Kong and other major venues.
