Roy Lichtenstein at the Whitney

The Whitney Museum is showcasing the works of Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) with two exhibits.

 

Roy Lichtenstein: 1997  focuses on the works that Lichtenstein did in the last year of his life. Some of drawings and collages in the exhibit are studies for works that have not been on view before and were never actualized. 

 

Roy Lichtenstein: 1997 opens of September 5 and will be on view in conjunction with Roy Lichtenstein: Like New, a major exhibit that will include about 130 works that Lichtenstein created from the early 1940s through the 1990s.

 

 

Included in the exhibit will be paintings, drawings, collages, prints, sculpture, and films that highlight the  way in which Lichtenstein used the images of mass culture to redefine the way in which we view art and the world around us.

 

One of the highlights of the exhibit are the works from Lichtenstein’s first exhibition of Pop-style work at Leo Castelli Gallery, shown together for the first time since 1962. Also on view will be works by Richard Pettibone (1938-2024) and other modern and contemporary artists who were influenced by Lichtenstein’s style. Roy Lichtenstein was born in New York. He studied at the Art Students League and Ohio State University. His studies were interrupted with a three-year stint in the Army from 1943 through 1946. He returned to Ohio State after his discharge, where he earned a Masters of Fine Arts degree and taught. Lichtenstein received numerous awards for his work, including the National Medal of Arts in 1995. He died in New York on September 29, 1997 at age 73.

 

Roy Lichtenstein: Like New will open at the Whitney on October 11, 2026. His works are also included in Guggenheim Pop: 1960 to Now  which will be on view through January 10, 2027.

 

An exhibit of his work is also being shown at Kunstmuseum Basel in Switzerland through March 14, 2027.
