The iconic Boca Raton resort is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Part of the celebration is the opening of the newly designed Cloister Inn Museum: A Mizner Legacy.
The museum is part of the resort’s original reception area, designed by Addison Mizner, whose vision and style defined the look of South Florida. Mizner planned the original hotel, including the 1926 reception area.
Welcoming guests to the bi-level gallery is a portrait of Mizner, created by portrait artist Serge Strosberg. The work was commissioned by The Boca Raton, in partnership with the Boca Raton Historical Society.
The work depicts Mizner standing alone, looking elegant. Missing from the portrait is Johnnie Brown, the spider money that Mizner kept on his shoulder as he strolled around Palm Beach.
Johnnie Brown has not been ignored. Strosberg has painted Monkeying Around Palm Beach, a series of portraits of Johnnie Brown enjoying the South Florida lifestyle that Mizner helped to create.
Strosberg, who was born in Belgium in 1966, studied art in Paris, lived in New York and has now settled in Palm Beach where, like Johnnie Brown, has embraced Palm Beach and has become a celebrated artist in the community.
His paintings in the Monkeying Around series, available at Surovek Gallery, are joyful and exquisitely rendered.
Artist and educator Winston Branch OBE (b.1947) has focused on light, color, space and depth in his paintings.
Branch was born in Saint Lucia and has spent much of his career painting in both the UK and California. He was awarded Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2024, the same year that his work was included in the Venice Biennale.
He has taught at the University of California, Berkley, Kansas State University and was a visiting tutor at Goldsmiths College in London and the Slade School of Art.
The works of Winston Branch are in permanent collection of the Tate, London, the British Museum, V&A, the Brooklyn Museum, the Legion of Honor and de Young Museum in San Francisco, the Saint Louis Art Museum and many other fine venues around the world.
