A big, beautiful, and very personal, exhibit of the works of Keith Haring (1958-1990) is currently on view at Sotheby’s Breuer Building on Madison Avenue.
The paintings, sculptures, furniture, photographs and writings are from the collection of Haring’s longtime friend, artist Kermit Oswald.
Haring and Oswald met in kindergarten, attended the same schools through high school and remained friends until Haring’s untimely death in 1990. Even after Haring moved from Kutztown, Pennsylvania to New York, the friends kept in touch.
Although Haring was arrested several times in the 1980s for doing chalk drawings on blank ad spaces on the New York subway platforms, his work lent credibility to street art, which is now a worldwide accepted art form.
Whenever Haring visited the Oswald home he would bring gifts, and work in Oswald’s woodworking shop. Haring was the godfather of Oswald’s son. Haring painted a crib and a matching dresser, which had been Oswald’s when he was an infant and were used by all four of Oswald’s children. The crib and dresser are expected to sell for $250,000 to $350,000.
Over the years Oswald kept everything that Haring had given to him and his family, and some of those gifts, including the crib and dresser, will be auctioned at Sotheby’s. “We’ve been finding Harings for 50 years in our own home,” Oswald said. “It’s like a treasure hunt.”
Haring’s House: Works From The Collection of Kermit Oswald will be on display at the Breuer Building through May 13 and will then put up for auction at Sotheby's.
Works that Haring created from 1980–1983 are currently on view at the Brant Foundation in the East Village, where Haring began his career. The exhibit will run through May 31st, 2026.
An exhibit that highlights Haring's sculptures and three dimensional works, including a Haring-painted 1963 Buick Special, will open at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. Keith Haring in 3D will be on view from June 6, 2026 through January 25, 2027.
