Wine Labels by Some of Our Favorite Artists

A warm glow from a fireplace and a glass of red wine can ease the cold of a winter night…even better if the wine bottle has a beautiful label. In 1945, to commemorate the Allied victory, French winemaker, Baron Philippe Rothschild, hired a young artist to design a wine label for Mouton Rothschild.

The Rothschild vineyard has continued the tradition, with a new label by an established artist every year since. Here's a look at some of the labels done by some of our favorite artists:

David Hockney 1937 - present

David Hockney's label pays tribute to the Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, who joined the family business in the late 1970s. Hockney was a personal friend of the Baroness. He was commissioned to design the label in 1914, the year she died, and is a tribute to his friend.

David Hockney's works on paper are currently on display at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. David Hockney: People, Places & Things  will be on exhibit through August 21, 2022.

Andy Warhol 1928-1987

Andy Warhol's focus on celebrity translated to two playful, horizontal portraits of Baron Phillipe Rothschild on his label in 1975.

An exhibit of Andy Warhol's work is currently on display at the Aspen Art Museum. The exhibit, Andy Warhol: Lifetimes originated at the Tate Modern in London, traveled to the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the Art Gallery of Toronto and will be at the Aspen Museum through March 27, 2022.

Keith Haring 1958-1990

Keith Haring's 1988 wine label is a playful spoof of the Rams that grace the Rothschild family coat of arms on the Mouton label.

An exhibit of Keith Haring's work is being show alongside that of Belgian artist, Pierre Alechinsky, whose playful style inspired Haring. Keith Haring and Pierre Alechinsky, will be on exhibit at the NSU Art Museum in Fort Lauderdale from February 27 through September 25, 2022.

Joan Miro 1893-1983

Joan Miro's 1969 wine label, made in his bold and expressive style, includes a large, red grape and a blue and yellow design that pays homage to the family's racing colors.

In 2012, Joan Miro's 1927 work, Peinture (Etoile Bleue), sold for more than £23.5 million, about $31.7 million, setting a new auction record for the artist.

Jeff Koons 1955 - present

Jeff Koons put his unique stamp on his version of the Birth of Venus fresco from Pompeii for the 2010 Rothschild label. Jeff Koons' giant Rabbit sculpture, created in 1986, sold for $91 million at Christie's in 2019, making him the world's most expensive living artist.
