Works by Stephen Scott Young and Donald Sultan

Stephen Scott Young 1957 -

 Stephen Scott Young is one of America's most accomplished watercolor artists. His masterful technique, in watercolor, etching and silverpoint, earned him recognition early in his career. In 1985, Young was given first prize in the American Artist Magazine national art competition. The following year, Young became the youngest living artist to have work sold at Christie's New York.

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Young's father was in the army and the family moved many times during his childhood. Inspired by The Great Masters of Art series that his mother gave him when he was nine, Young was intrigued by the works of Caravaggio. The darks and lights of Young's paintings and the masterful compositions reflect his study of the great Italian master.

Young studied printmaking at the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida, where he met and married fellow student, Annette Farrington, from the Bahamas. Their travels to Farrington's childhood home awakened something in him. The light, the colors and the people became the subjects of many of his greatest works. Young has a studio in both Florida and the Bahamas.

Our recent acquisitions by Stephen Scott Young include Sketching, Waiting (Yellow Shutters), Bright Baby Blues and Quenton, a study for the painting that won him the American Artist Magazine competition.

Donald Sultan 1951 -

Last April, during the height of the pandemic, the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill, New York, asked over 100 artists, who lived and worked in the area, to submit a 2-minute video about their life and work during quarantine. The project, called Artist Stories From the Pandemic is a look at how those artists coped during a difficult time in our history.

Donald Sultan was one of the artists who was asked to submit a video. (Just coincidentally, his sister, Terrie Sultan, is the Parrish Museum's curator.) Sultan's works, even his silkscreens, are not just a wonderful visual experience, they're also a tactile experience. The printing process itself gives rise to a certain amount of texture and Sultan uses flocking and thick board to create an additional dimension.

In his video, Sultan talks about the diminished experience that art lovers have when they view art virtually rather than in person. Donald Sultan's Red Poppies Suite, Reds and Blacks and 12 Colors are recent acquisitions.
