Julio Larraz’s Retrospective at the Coral Gables Museum

Julio Larraz is preparing for the first museum retrospective of his work in the United States. Larraz is considered one of the most influential figures in Latin American art today. His work has been exhibited widely, internationally, and he has generously mentored young artists.

 

Larraz was born in Havana in 1944. His politically active family were forced to flee Cuba, and settled in Miami in 1961. Although self-taught, Larraz’s style is sophisticated, flawless and he gives his works a dream-like quality, peppered with humor and irony. Shortly after arriving in the U.S., his drawings and caricatures were published in the New York Times, The Washington Post, Vogue, Rolling Stone, Time, Ramparts, Newsweek, and The Chicago Tribune. His first solo museum exhibit was at the Boca Raton Museum of Art in 1998.

 

Once he was able to paint full time, Larraz lived in Italy for a few years, then traveled to Paris and New Mexico, before settling permanently in Miami in 2004. Larraz’s imagination plays a large part in his work. He calls the dream-like images he captures in his artwork The Kingdom We Carry Inside, which is the name of the upcoming retrospective at the Coral Gables Museum.

 

Julio Larraz: The Kingdom We Carry Inside is a collaboration between the Coral Gables Museum and the Julio Larraz Foundation. The exhibit includes early works from the 1960s as well as current work, gathered from private and public collections, and from the Larraz family collection and archives. The exhibit will be on display from December 1st, 2021 through April 30th, 2022.
