Wolf Kahn 1927 - 2020
This year the Brattleboro Museum held an exhibit called Figuration Never Died: New York Painterly Painting, 1950-1970. The exhibit included the works of Wolf Kahn, Robert Dinero Sr., Alex Katz and other painters whose lives intersected in New York and in more natural settings, like Vermont and Maine.
Wolf Kahn was an active member of the museum. He and his wife, painter Emily Mason, spent summers painting at the farm they bought in Brattleboro in 1968, although Kahn said that he completed his paintings in his Manhattan studio.
In a 1975 article in Art Forum magazine, Kahn wrote, "Painting continues to be image-making at its highest, most direct and most flexible level. It is at once furthest removed from the everyday world . . . and at the same time painting can include the most intimate symbolic correspondences with life rhythms and life experiences in general, as well as with human aspirations of the most rarified kind."
Wolf Kahn's works are included in the permanent collections of The Met, MoMA, the Whitney, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and many other fine museums and galleries.
Pat Steir 1940 - present
A 2020 documentary, Pat Steir: Artist, is now available on Amazon and YouTube. Filmmaker Veronica Gonzalez Peña spent two years with Pat Steir, watching her live and work. Steir has been exhibiting her work in the US and Europe for the past fifty years. She currently has an expansive exhibit of thirty large-scale paintings at the Hirshhorn Museum titled Pat Steir: Color Wheel. The Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden is open, but the main building remains closed and the opening of the Pat Stier exhibit is to be announced.
Steir's works can be found in the permanent collections of the Louvre, the Tate, the Met, MoMA, the Whitney, the Guggenheim, the National Gallery in Washington and many other fine venues around the world.
