Reggie Burrows Hodges First New York Solo Show

The works of Reggie Burrows Hodges are getting rave reviews at his first New York solo exhibit. In 3 Art Gallery Shows to See Right Now, The New York Times called his work, "at once visually striking and dense with cultural argument." Architectural Digest said, "The people-oriented paintings of Reggie Burrows Hodges possess the ability to draw in even the casual bystander. Now, thanks to an exhibition at Karma, Manhattanites will have the opportunity to see this artist's works up close. For his New York debut, Hodges presents a series of canvases that are as rich in color as they are in substance."

Hodges explores the relationship between humans and their surroundings. He begins each work with a black background and, with masterful brushstrokes, creates moments in time and space that are both story and metaphor.

Hodges was born in Compton, California in 1965. He lives and works in Maine, where he is an Adjunct Instructor in the Animation and Game Art Department of the Maine College of Art in Portland. In 2020, he received the annual Joan Mitchell Painters & Sculptors Grant and has an upcoming solo exhibition at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art in 2022. His solo exhibit at the Karma Gallery runs through March 14, 2021.

David Hockney at Sotheby's

David Hockney said that he wanted to live in a place where he could smoke a cigarette in a cafe after a meal, something he couldn't do in the U.S. or the U.K. He found the perfect place in Normandy, France, two years ago, just before the pandemic. Hockney has used the lockdown to create paintings of the Normandy landscape around his scenic farmhouse.

The Lelong Gallery in Paris exhibited the paintings, although each one was sold before the show opened to the public last October. Most museums and galleries in Paris have been closed, and the show, David Hockney: Ma Normandie, was a treat for art lovers. Hockney still works on his iPad as well as painting with acrylic. His works have become some of the most garnered in the art world.

Sotheby's announced that Hockney's painting Tall Dutch Trees After Hobbema (Useful Knowledge) will be offered at its Spring auction. The painting, which is one of a series of twenty, and was featured on a cover of The New Yorker magazine in 2018. The painting's estimated auction price is between $8.8 to 11.5 million.
