The extraordinary works of Kenyan artist Kaloki Nyamai (b.1985) are currently on view at the Venice Biennale. They are included in the exhibit called In Minor Keys that brings together the works of over 100 international artists.
Nyamai works with acrylic paints, sisal rope, yarn, charcoal and other medium to create works that examine and reflect aspects of contemporary society.
He was encouraged by his mother to draw and paint when he was a child and learned traditional Kamba stories and history from his grandmother. Nyamai studied interior design at the Buruburu Institute of Fine Arts in Nairobi and then began a career as a fine artist.
His works have brought him much success, something that he has shared with his community. He has built a studio in Karen, a Nairobi suburb, where he encourages children and community members to visit, interact with him and his art and even create art of their own.
Kalki Nyamai’s works will be on view at the Venice Biennale through November 22, 2026. His work is also on exhibit at the University of Michigan Museum of Art’s Gallery of African Art through Spring 2026.
It’s always a pleasure to view the works of portrait artist Serge Strosberg (b. 1966). The Belgian-born artist studied graphic design at the Académie Julian in Paris and morphology at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts.
He has lived in Paris and New York, and now lives with his family in Palm Beach. He embraced Palm Beach culture with modernized portraits of Palm Beach’s pioneers. Since his Reimagining Palm Beach series, shown in 2024, he has continued to create portraits of Palm Beach trailblazers.
His Monkey Business in Palm Beach series is a tribute to South Florida architect Addison Mizner’s monkey, Johnnie Brown, and a nod to the beauty and culture of Palm Beach.
Serge Strosberg’s paintings are modern, joyful, done in the rich tradition of oil and egg tempura on linen.
