Art has the power to make human ties stronger and help us think, feel, and look at things differently.
- Beatriz Milhazes
Beatriz Milhazes (b.1960) creates bold, colorful and textured works through unique techniques that combine the transfer of images from sheets of plastic to canvas or paper and adding to the original work by hand. The results are vibrant abstract works with intricate patterns and symbols.
Milhazes was born in Brazil and has become one of the country’s most beloved artists. The colors she uses reflect the joy of Rio Carnival. The symbols she uses are both culturally specific and universal.
Beatriz Milhazes: Rigor and Beauty is currently on exhibit at the Guggenheim New York and will run through September 14, 2025.
Coming up at the Guggenheim is an exhibit of the work of Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008). The exhibit is just one of several scheduled in museums around the world, to celebrate the artist’s 100th birthday.
Rauschenberg’s radical approach to art in the 1950s influenced the modern movements that followed and the variety of techniques that artists use today.
Rauschenberg saw little artwork growing up in Port Arthur, Texas. He was drafted in 1943 and sent to San Diego. His first exposure to fine art was at the Huntington Art Gallery in California when he was on leave. His desire to draw and paint, and his talent, led him to take art classes at the Kansas Art Institute with help from the G.I. Bill.
Robert Rauschenberg: Life Can’t Be Stopped will be on view at the Guggenheim from October 10, 2025 through April 5, 2026.
The Museum of the City of New York is planning an exhibit of the artist’s photographs and found materials. Robert Rauschenberg’s New York: Pictures from the Real World will be on view from September 12, 2025 through March 22, 2026.
The Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Germany and the Fundación Juan March in Madrid, Spain will also be commemorating the 100th anniversary of Rauschenberg’s birth.
