Derrick Adams Honored in NYC

Andy Warhol at Auction

Brooklyn-based artist Derrick Adams will be presented with the 2025 Gina Quattrochi Arts & Legacy Award on June 16th. The award is being presented by Bailey House, the leading provider of housing and supportive services for New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses. Past recipients of the award include Whoopi Goldberg, Debby Harris and the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation.

Adams is not only generous in his New York community, he is also supportive of the artists in his hometown of Baltimore. In addition to The Last Resort Artist Retreat, a residency program that subscribes to the concept of leisure as therapy for Black artists and Zora’s Den, an online community of Black women writers, Adams launched the Scout Affordable Art Fair last month. The idea for Scout is to establish a venue for emerging artists to display and sell their work.

Adams is a tenured assistant professor at Brooklyn College’s School of Visual, Media and Performing Arts. He is ‘professorial' about his art. “I like the idea of letting things flow through me in a way that’s more intuitive and allowing people to rummage through it and pick out things that resonate with them,” he said in a CNN interview. . “(My work) has all the symbolism and all of the entry points that could make it way more complex,” he said. “But it also allows people to have an escape if they don’t want to do that.”

In addition to recent successful exhibits in the U.S. and London, Adams has collaborated with Movado to create watch and clock designs in his colorful, joyful style.

Some of the images are based on his Floater series. Boy on Swan Float, 2020, from that series is available at Surovek Gallery.

Works by Andy Warhol did well at May’s Modern and Contemporary auction at Christies. Flowers screenprint, done in 1964 in response to President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, garnered $35.5 million and The Last Supper, done in 1968, sold for $7.06 million.

A current exhibit at the Andy Warhol Museum explores Warhol’s screenprint techniques; not just his process, but also his reasons for using screenprint and his collaborations with master printmakers. Good Business: Andy Warhol’s Screenprints will be on view through September 1, 2025.
