I strive to bring out the best in people’s souls and create a tribute to their life and humanity.
- Serge Strosberg
Serge Strosberg is one of the finest contemporary portrait artists in the world.
He was born in Antwerp, and studied graphic design and illustration, graduating with honors from the prestigious Academie Julian in Paris. He was the recipient of the Jan Cockx Prize from the Museum of Contemporary Art of Antwerp.
“I love to explore themes of transformation, questions of authenticity and themes of ‘the other.’” he said in an interview with Florida Weekly. “I discreetly push boundaries, reveal subjects to him or herself and to his or her society and reveal secrets.”
Strosberg has been living and working in Palm Beach, and has embraced the lifestyle and essence of the city.
After painting Palm Beach architect Addison Mizner with his pet monkey, Johnnie Brown, Strosberg has devoted an entire series of paintings to Johnnie Brown, whose headstone can be found near Worth Avenue.
Monkey Business in Palm Beach is a series of works, honoring Johnnie Brown as a true member of Palm Beach society. Strosberg combines AI images with the time-honored techniques of oil and egg tempera that he learned in Paris to create each portrait.
This year, Strosberg has imagined Johnnie on the golf course as 47, at the Palm Beach Mariner’s Club and having a weekend getaway.
“I want my work to be new and as different as possible from anything that’s been done before.” Strosberg said. “I value originality and bring a discerning viewpoint to all my work.”
Strosberg has succeeded in both creating works that are original with a discerning viewpoint.
