Winston Branch Exhibit in Paris

The Work of Fairfield Porter at Surovek Gallery

The works of Winston Branch (b.1947) are currently on view at  Cahiers d’Art Gallery in Paris.

Branch was born in Saint Lucia in 1947 and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. His early works were figurative paintings, inspired by the religious works of Old Masters. As his work and experience progressed, Branch became increasingly inspired by color, light and texture and began to create abstract paintings. “Through color you see light and light through color you get feeling and that was where I began.” he said.

Branch has moved between London, Berlin, Europe, Latin America, and the US, where he has taught, lectured and painted. He has been an artist-in-residence at Fisk University in Nashville, and a professor at the University of California, Berkeley.

His contributions to art and education have earned him distinguished honors, including The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE), an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from the University of Greenwich, and recognition from the Organization of American States.

The paintings of Winston Branch are part of the permanent collection of the Tate, the British Museum, The Brooklyn Museum, The Arts Council of Great Britain, Sinclair Research Limited in the United Kingdom, the Victoria and Albert Museum, John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, Sprint World Headquarters Campus, Her Majesty’s Military Government in Berlin and other major venues and private collections.

Winston Branch: The Luminous Gesture will be on view at Cahiers d’Art Gallery through  April 30, 2025.

During his lifetime, Fairfield Porter (1907-1975) was better known as an art critic than as an artist. He wrote about the Abstract Expressionism and other prevalent styles of the times, but his own paintings were representational portraits of his friends and family and of the views around his Southampton home.

Porter’s works had an impact on younger artists, like Alex Katz, who also focused his works on paintings of the people and places around him.

Porter had the ability to look inside a room, through a window and take the ordinary and turn in into the extraordinary.

He was born in Illinois, studied art at Harvard and the Art Students League and continued his education by traveling through Europe and studying the works of the Old Masters.

Porter’s works are part of the permanent collection of the Met, MoMA, the National Gallery in D.C., the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and many other fine museums and galleries.
