Hunt Slonem's Bright and Beautiful Birds at Surovek Gallery

Monkeying Around Palm Beach with Serge Strosberg

Hunt Slonem (b.1951) says that he loves to wake up and paint everyday. “It’s my life’s elixir.” he said.

The joy his work brings him, and the joy he brings to his work, clearly shows. His paintings of birds, bunnies and butterflies can be found in homes, galleries and museums around the world.

Last fall Slonem had his first garden exhibit at the San Antonio Botanical Garden, where he displayed ten-foot tall bunnies cover in glittering pieces of hand-cut  mosaic glass and other bird and butterfly sculptures:

He has been working and living in New York, with his colorful pet birds, since 1973, and is also restoring landmark homes in Louisiana (he earned a degree in painting and art history from Tulane), New York and Massachusetts.

Hunt Slonem’s works can be found in the permanent collections of 250 museums around the world, including the Guggenheim, The Met, The Whitney, the Miro Foundation and the New Orleans Museum of Art.

Belgian-American artist, Serge Strosberg (b.1966) studied art in the U.S. and in France. He is a masterful portrait painter and behind each work is a story.

In 2023, Strosberg created a series of paintings, based on vintage photographs, from the collection of the Palm Beach County History Museum.

One of the photos that Strosberg turned into a painting was of Addison Mizner (1872-1933), the architect whose signature style defined much of the look of Palm Beach. The photo shows Mizner with his pet monkey, Johnnie Brown, sitting on his shoulder.

Strosberg reimagined Johnnie Brown as a Palm Beach resident, in a series  he calls Monkeying Around Palm Beach.  “…….I am both an observer” Strosberg said in a 2024 interview, “and an active part of Palm Beach high society as someone who has the privilege of living on the island of Palm Beach and attending some of the galas and elite cocktail parties.”

Works from the Monkeying Around Palm Beach series are available at Surovek Gallery.
