Works by Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes (b.1960) are currently on exhibit at the 2024 Venice Biennale in the Applied Arts Pavilion in the Arsenale. The works were created especially for this exhibition, in collaboration with London’s Victoria & Albert Museum and Brazilian curator Adriano Pedrosa.
Milhazes’ works are colorful, powerful compositions that reflect the aesthetics of her native Rio de Janeiro, where she continues to live and work.
The exhibit at the Venice Biennale will be on view through November 24, 2024.
Milhazes has an upcoming exhibit at the Tate St. Ives in Cornwall, UK, that includes work done in the last forty years and showcases the evolution of her practice. The title of the show is Maresias, the Portuguese term for salty sea breeze, reflecting the coastal environment of Rio that influences her works.
Beatriz Milhazes: Maresias will be on exhibit from May 25, 2024 through September 29, 2024.
Among the works by Beatriz Milhazes at Surovek Gallery is Mother”s Day, a woodblock screenprint and goldleaf done in the artist’s unique, joyful style.
The feelings that Scott Kelley is able to imbue in his works are those of awe, respect and the utmost care for the flora and fauna that he paints so masterfully.
Kelley is a wonderful observer of the places he visits, especially the Florida swamps, where he has managed to capture the feel of the wild, filled with wonderous sights, and share them with his viewers.
To get an idea of the lengths Kelley will go to paint in the wildest of settings, here’s a video of him describing his adventures in Ah-shi-sle-pah, New Mexico: https://www.scottkelleystudio.com/video-
These days we aren’t surprised when we pass murals on buildings in public places, but that wasn’t always the case.
It was in large part the works of Keith Haring (1958-1990) that garnered public acceptance of street art, with his belief that “art is for everybody.”
Radiant: The Life and Line of Keith Haring by Brad Gooch is a recently published biography of Haring that explores Haring’s career in terms of public acceptance and museum exclusion. Haring’s instantly recognizable works are often on mugs, buttons and shirts in museum gift shops but are not often displayed on museum walls.
His murals can be found in public spaces around the world and his generosity of spirit continues through the work of The Keith Haring Foundation.
More than 100 of Haring’s works are currently on display at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Keith Haring: Art Is for Everybody will be on exhibit through September 8, 2024.
