The Works of Derrick Adams, Wolf Kahn and Emily Mason

Derrick Adams 1970 -

Derrick Adams has built an 'invitation only' retreat in his home town of Baltimore called The Last Resort, hoping to give Black artists a chance to experience rest and relaxation. Leisure is important to Adams, who grew up with a close and loving family and friends who knew how to enjoy themselves. Much of Adams work is based on the pleasurable times that friends and family shared, like How I Spent My Summer, a recent acquisition at Surovek Gallery.

 

Adams moved to New York from Baltimore to attend Pratt Institute and then went on to complete his MFA at Columbia. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, where he teaches art at Brooklyn College. His work is currently on exhibit at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit, as part of a show called Men of Change: Power. Triumph. Truth. The exhibit looks at the impact that Black men have had on science, politics, art, sports, industry and other disciplines, through the works of contemporary artists.

 

Men of Change: Power. Triumph. Truth. will be on exhibit through January 2, 2022.

 

Wolf Kahn 1927 - 2020, Emily Mason 1932-2019

Wolf Kahn painted some of the finest landscapes that the art world has ever seen. He took great pleasure in the summers he spent in Brattleboro, Vermont, painting alongside his wife, Emily Mason, for more than sixty years.

 

Though Kahn loved being in Brattleboro, and was a well-liked neighbor and supporter of the arts in Vermont, Kahn said that he did his best artwork in his Manhattan studio, working from the preliminary work he did during the summer. Wolf Kahn died just a few months after Emily Mason. Together they left a legacy of fine work.

 

Fuchsia Horizon, a wonderful example of Kahn's use of color, is a recent acquisition at Surovek Gallery. Though their painting styles differed, both Kahn and Mason were masters of color.
