Alex Katz 1927
Being an artist can be a very solitary undertaking. For 93-year-old Alex Katz, it has been working every day, alone in his studio, for decades. During most of the year he lives and works in the SoHo studio that he and his wife and model, Ada, have been living in since 1968. They spend summers in their home and studio in Lincolnville, Maine.
But solitude only goes so far for the artist. Artists want their work seen and, hopefully, sold to collectors who appreciate its value. This year has seen many people around the world, especially young people, viewing art work on line and taking a keen interest in the art market. Although many galleries and museums remain closed, some have remained open, limiting the number of visitors.
Alex Katz's large landscape paintings are currently on display at the gallery in the converted Sant'Andrea de Scaphis church in Rome. Upcoming solo exhibits of Katz's works are scheduled for 2022 at the National Museum of Art in Osaka, Japan, the Museum Voorlinden in Wassenaar, Netherlands and a retrospective at the Guggenheim in New York.
Reggie Burrows Hodges
Last July the work of Reggie Burrows Hodges was shown alongside the work of Alex Katz, Jonas Wood and other fine artists at New York's Karma Gallery's (Nothing But) Flowers show.
Burrows will be having a solo exhibit at the Karma Gallery this year and has a solo show scheduled in 2022 at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockland, Maine. Burrows is an adjunct professor at the Maine College of Art. He was awarded the 2020 Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant.
David Hockney
David Hockney has been painting on canvas, and on his iPad, at his house in Normandy. His latest iPad painting for cover of The New Yorker has created a stir on Twitter.
Françoise Mouly, the New Yorker's art director, said she chose the painting because, "For these short, dark days, David Hockney offers the traditional comfort of a hearth."
Hockney, who broke the auction record for a living artist in 2018, has current solo exhibits at the Galerie Lelong inParis, The Morgan Library and Museum in New York and an ongoing exhibit at Salts Mill inSaltaire, West Yorkshire, UK.
Upcoming solo exhibits are planned for later this year at The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas and at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
