“Ridge Church” will be included in Betsy James Wyeth’s forthcoming catalogue raisonnė of the artist’s work. The present work depicts Ridge Church in Martinsville, Maine and served as a study for the drybrush painting entitled Shellback. Built in 1817, Ridge Church is located between the towns of Port Clyde and tenants Harbor, Maine. This region of Maine holds immense importance for Wyeth and his family. In 1978, Andrew and Betsy Wyeth purchase the Tenants Harbor lighthouse and the artist utilized the base of the bell tower for his studio. Wyeth spent most of his career from the 1920’s to 2008 depicting the landscape of Maine and his family has become synonymous with the region.
