Tyler Hobbs
I want to find new ways to deeply merge the hand with the algorithm, to make the logical and illogical processes interact. - Tyler Hobbs
Tyler Hobbs was born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1987. and raised just outside of Austin, Texas. He has been drawing and painting since he was a child. Hobbs received a B.S. in Computer Science at the University of Texas at Austin in 2010.
His ability to combine his computer and fine art skills have made him one of the most admired generative artists in the art world. One of the works from his Fidenza NFT series sold for $3.3 million in 2021.
Hobbs creative process is unique in the generative art world; he develops an algorithm, expands it through sketching, incorporates his analog and digital ideas, curates the work and decides on the final format. Unlike other generative artists whose works remain in only digital format, Hobbs often prints, then hand draws on each work and chooses a framework on which to display each piece.
Although Hobbs’ does mostly figurative art by hand, he says that his style was profoundly influenced by the work of Agnes Martin. He first saw Untitled #5 1984, a 72 x 72-inch all-gray painting by Martin, about ten years ago at the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin “Her work has taught me to take a closer look at things,” Hobbs said, “and that level of attention opens up an entirely new way of experiencing and creating art. It’s not so much Minimalism as a movement that has influenced my work—it’s minimalist artists’ modes of thinking about structure and detail.”
Hobbs received the Hall of Honor Award from the University of Texas at Austin, College of Natural Sciences in 2024. He was a Finalist for the 2025 HOFA Digital Art Awards. His work can be found in private collections around the world and in major venues like the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the University of Texas at Austin.
Tyler Hobbs lives in Austin with his wife and daughter. In a addition to his artwork, Hobbs is an avid gardener, skateboarder and musician.
