Keith Haring at Auction, Alex Katz at the Guggenheim

Keith Haring at Auction

A painting by Keith Haring sold for £3,206,000 ($4,181,630) at Phillips London auction on February 13th.

Keith Haring
Untitled, 1981

The 96 x 96 inch Untitled painting was included in the groundbreaking 1982 show organized by art dealer Tony Shafrazi. The work was purchased by an anonymous collector, who held on to it until this auction, although it was shown at a Haring retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York in 1997 and the retrospective Keith Haring: The Political Line at the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris in 2013.

Haring produced the Untitled painting shortly after the assassination of John Lennon. He said that the image of the two figures in the painting came to him in a dream.

The repeated figures, lines and colors are pure Haring, whose works remain as relevant today as they were before his death in 1990.

Just this year his works have been the subject of three retrospectives, with a current solo exhibit in Brussels and an upcoming solo show in Germany.

Alex Katz Retrospective at the Guggenheim

Alex Katz’s bold colors and simplified portraits and landscapes have made him an American icon. The Guggenheim Museum has announced plans for a 2022 retrospective to honor the extraordinary career of the 92-year-old artist.

Katz still works every day in his SoHo studio, where he has been living with his wife, Ada, since 1968. The couple spends summers at their home in Maine, where Katz has produced many incredible landscapes. His unique style has led to a career that has included more than 200 solos shows and nearly 500 group exhibits in the United States and abroad since 1951.
