THOMAS HART BENTON
EXHIBITION OF 20 PAINTINGS
February 1st – March 22nd, 2017
It is with great pride we bring you this intimate exhibition of work by one of America’s greatest artists. This survey of over twenty works spans six decades of Benton’s career. His revolutionary technique and subject matter played a vital role in the development of the regional spirit of the times and in American art history.
Today, Benton is considered the greatest muralist of the 20th century, as exemplified by the Metropolitan’s “America Today” or the murals in the Missouri State Capitol. It is his paintings depicting the relevant and unpopular scenes, however, that solidified his place in art history. Social realism, political unease, racial tensions, Greek mythology, and common folklore were all strong interests throughout his career. His unique fl uid style of painting helps to beautifully convey what otherwise might be considered an unattractive subject matter.
I have had the privilege of being surrounded by incredible works of art my whole life. There are very few artists that hold greater meaning to me than Thomas Hart Benton.
My deepest thanks to our close friends who have generously loaned their paintings to this exhibition. I hope our shared passion for the artist shines through.
