The world, as we knew it, has been going through radical changes during these past few weeks. Our personal and professional lives have been disrupted and we have had to modify many of our activities of daily living.
In the art world, many museums and galleries are closed, and virtual visits have increased. Statistics that came out of Sotheby’s March 31st Modern and Contemporary African and Middle East online auctions revealed some interesting facts about new dynamics in the art market:
Statistics on Bidders & Buyers:
– 35% of bidders were new to Sotheby’s, translating to 27% of buyers purchasing lots for the first time at Sotheby’s.
– Almost 30% of bidders in the sale were under 40 years old.
– Participants hailed from 22 countries.
With many museums and galleries closed to the public, and offering virtual tours online, it stands to reason that more people than ever have been seeking comfort and solace by surfing for art. One of the unexpected consequences of people staying at home is that many are beginning to educate themselves and learning to appreciate works of art.
There is also comfort in seeing the world as an artist has seen it, and remember that beautiful still exists in the world and, hopefully we will soon be back with our family, friends and be able to return to the places we love to visit.
Close to home, in Palm Beach, our most esteemed museums, like The Norton Museum, are closed, but are offering virtual tours.
The Norton Museum of Art
The Norton Museum of Art opened its doors on February 8, 1941. The museum underwent a major renovation and reopened on February 9, 2019 with an additional 12,000 square feet of gallery space, new classrooms, a restaurant, and a 210-seat auditorium, in addition to the sculpture garden.
With its doors now closed, the current exhibit, Robert Rauschenberg: Five Decades from the Whitney’s Collection is on display in empty galleries, but the works can be viewed online.
A wonderful exhibit of American Impressionists, like Thomas Hart Benton, was also closed to public viewing.
The museum is offering art education, activities, a link to museum videos and access to the mobile tour through their Norton From Home program.
