Celebrating 80 Years at the Norton Museum of Art

The Norton Museum of Art opened to the public on February 8, 1941 and has been serving West Palm Beach and the surrounding community for eighty years. The Norton underwent a renovation, completed in 2019, that expanded the museum’s gallery and teaching space.

It now has a state-of-the art, 210-seat auditorium, a new store and restaurant and a Great Hall that serves as the Museum’s “living room.” The expansion also includes a lawn for outdoor programs, and a sculpture garden. The project also included the renovation of six Museum-owned, 1920s-era cottages to house an artist-in-residence program, and the Museum Director’s home.

To celebrate its 80th anniversary, the Norton held a virtual gala and an auction on the Sotheby’s website that included works by Alex Katz and Jeff Koons. The museum is open to the public from Friday to Sunday with limited capacity and advance, timed-ticket reservations.

A current exhibition features the prints and drawings from the collection of Esther and Summer Feldberg, which includes the works of contemporary artists like Roy Lichtenstein and Jasper Johns, whose works are available at Surovek Gallery. The exhibition of The Collection of Esther M. and Sumner L. Feldberg runs through March 28, 2021.

A Look at the Collaborations of Keith Haring

Keith Haring is another artist whose work is featured at the Norton’s collection. He was a compelling force in the New York art scene in the 1970s and ’80s. A recently published book called Keith Haring’s Line: Race and the Performance of Desire by Ricardo Montez looks at the collaborative works of Haring and the influence that race and gender had on his designs.

An outgoing, social and socially conscious artist, Haring came in contact with many of his contemporaries and collected their work. Haring’s legacy, The Keith Haring Foundation, supports not-for-profit organizations that assist children, as well as organizations involved in education, prevention, and care related to AIDS. Works from Haring’s personal collection were auctioned off last September to benefit New York’s LGBT Center. Haring’s collection includes works by Andy Warhol, Jean Michel Basquiat, Roy Lichtenstein and other incredible and influential artists, whose works are available at Surovek Gallery.

And if you’re in the market for an apartment in New York, complete with an original Keith Haring mural, there is a triplex available in Tribeca. Haring painted the mural in 1978, when he was a student at the School of Visual Arts. The asking price for the Tribeca loft is $8 million.
