The Hudson River School
The Hudson River School is perhaps as emblematic as America itself and was instrumental in establishing a distinctly American movement referred to as luminism. The artists of the Hudson River School painted an “edenic” America; landscapes most often void of the human element and reflecting the power and beauty of God. Thomas Cole and Asher B. Durand are perhaps the fathers of this movement. Luminism is defined by the works of Fitz Hugh Lane, Jasper Cropsey, Albert Bierstadt, Martin Johnson Heade and Frederick Kensett.
