Biography

My process is usually driven by an initial image in my head inspired by anything from the typeface of a movie poster to color combinations in Paul Klee’s early work. - Andrew Brischler

Andrew Brischler is an American artist, born in Long Island in 1987. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from SUNY New Paltz with a BFA in painting and drawing in 2009 and earned an MFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2012.

Brischler received the Rema Hort Mann Foundation Visual Arts Grant in 2013 and a Painting Fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts in 2015.

He has been a Guest Lecturer at Rutgers University, Visiting Artist at Sage College in Albany, New York, Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont and a Visiting Critic at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York.

In an interview with LVL3, Brischler was asked about the materials and process that he uses to create in works: “I’m really devoted to traditional materials––oil paint, acrylic paint, colored pencils, markers, and graphite.” he said, “My process is usually driven by an initial image in my head inspired by anything from the typeface of a movie poster to color combinations in Paul Klee’s early work. Then it’s just about execution, and depending on the type of piece I’m working on, the execution can take anywhere from a week (my recent Air paintings are all about 5-6 glazes of oil paint on smoothly gessoed canvas) to 2-3 months for the colored pencil drawings on panel; the colored pencil pieces are exhausting, frustrating, tedious, and seriously painful for my hand; that notion of labor, discipline, self-sacrifice, and slow punishment is so important to the conceptual success of them.”

His work has been shown in solo and group exhibits throughout the U.S, the UK and Europe, and is in the permanent collection of The Hall Art Foundation, the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, the University Art Museum at the State University of New York at Albany and the Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection (The Bunker) in West Palm Beach.

Andrew Brischler lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
